Living in Excellence: Commitment

Well since I haven’t posted in a week, and my plan has been to post every day, it got me thinking about commitment.

There is no question that I am committed to my consulting practice, my clients and my blog… so why haven’t I posted in a week?

Well I have the usual answers — I just got too busy; I wasn’t inspired; I had other priorities; and I got hooked on the Michael Jackson coverage (well not really, but the last one sounded like a good excuse).

But none of those are totally true, because true commitment means that you make a CHOICE to do what you said you were going to do.  There just aren’t any excuses if you are truly committed.

We’re living in an age of excuses and victim mentality… so my only REAL reason for not posting last week is that I chose not to — for whatever reason.

Commitment has a lot to do with my theme of excellence.  We make and break commitments every day and don’t see it as such.  If you’re five minutes late to a meeting, you’ve broken a commitment to be on time.  If you blow off tonights PTO meeting because you’re “too tired,” you’ve broken your commitment to support the school.  If you attend church when it’s convenient for you, then you are not committed to your faith.

Whenever you don’t live up to your own expectations for yourself (which I hope are HIGH), you have broken a commitment.

I love this quote of Zig Ziglar’s: “It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”

If you’re trying to lose 10 lbs, stop smoking, increase exercise, or reach higher levels in your career… but you lack commitment, you might as well just give up right now.  If you ever hear yourself say, “I’ll try…” you are NOT COMMITTED.  Trying never accomplished anything.

Try this:  If there is a pencil or pen nearby, I’d like you to TRY to pick it up.  Go ahead… TRY.  I dare you.

“But,” you say, “It’s not hard, I can pick up the pen!”  And THAT IS THE POINT!  You didn’t TRY to pick it up, you picked it up!  Because there is no “trying” in life — EITHER YOU DO IT OR YOU DON’T.  That is one of those extremely simple, yet very profound statements…

There is no such thing as trying.  Go ahead — try to read to the end of this post… I dare you!

I’m waiting… la la dee dah… hmmm hmmm… la la la…

Doo dah doo dah day…

Shah boom shah boom…

Du lang du lang du lang

OK…. have you followed this far?  Then you didn’t TRY, you did it!  Good for you.

Now today, promise yourself that you will not TRY to do anything at all.  You either will or you won’t; you do or you don’t; you make it or you don’t make it; you’re on time or you’re not.

“Trying” is just an excuse for a lack of commitment.

See you tomorrow… I promise to be here!
